I Go Tokyo: A Must-Visit Japanese-Inspired Gift Store
By Emily Patton
If you’re searching for the perfect gift or simply want to treat yourself to a unique trinket, sticker, or snack, look no further than I Go Tokyo. Located among the charming shops on Frazier Avenue, I Go Tokyo is a true love letter to Japan. Owner Margaret Amour, who travels to Japan twice a year to handpick the store’s beautifully curated items, has an uncanny talent for finding delightful surprises you never knew you needed. Whether it’s corgi-shaped sticky notes, a carrot-shaped pen, or a delicate floral dish, something is sure to catch your eye.
The storefront itself is a perfect example of the wide range of gifts I Go Tokyo has to offer. To the left, you’ll find an array of adorable plushies that will tempt both children and adults alike. On the right, the window showcases an elegant selection of kitchenware, including high-quality linen aprons, bowls, teapots, and sake cups. As you step inside, you’re greeted by the bright natural light reflecting off the white walls and the friendly smiles of the staff. My first stop is always the front table, where a fresh arrangement of handpicked items awaits. Currently, it’s all about back-to-school essentials, featuring cute erasers, pens, and notebooks.
I Go Tokyo may be small, but it packs a punch. The floor-to-ceiling shelves maximize every inch of space, making it easy to lose track of time as you wander the aisles. I’m particularly fond of the tiny ceramic cats and dogs hidden throughout the store, and I often find myself getting lost in the extensive stationery section at the back. Nearby, the sample bags of specialty Kit-Kat flavors—exclusive to Japan—always tempt me, whether for a friend or as a sweet treat for myself.
As a frequent visitor, I’m continually impressed by how the store maintains such an elegantly styled space while offering such a diverse range of merchandise. There’s a delightful mix of whimsy, with mystery boxes and quirky stickers, alongside more refined options for the serious gift-giver. The store perfectly captures the essence of Japanese retail, balancing fun and sophistication. It’s become my go-to spot for finding last-minute gifts, from a travel journal for a friend’s graduation to fabric for my grandmother who loves to sew, and an embroidered hand towel featuring a black bear for my brother.
Each item in I Go Tokyo is thoughtfully curated, reflecting the store’s deep appreciation for both Japan and the beauty of cross-cultural exchange. While some products might prompt questions, the knowledgeable staff is always eager to explain the story behind each item. I also love that the store features local talent, like manga artist Kat Hackler, further showcasing the wonderful fusion of cultures while supporting the Northshore community. Brimming with charm, I Go Tokyo is a delightful addition to any shopping experience.
