Pet-Friendly Activities In and Around Northshore
By Emma Smith and Robert C. Baker
Having a ruff day? No longer! When it comes to enjoying Chattanooga’s great outdoors, bringing your pet is an absolute must. Fortunately, Northshore has tons to offer in terms of pet- friendly green space, so whatever your needs may be, you’re sure to find something that will leave you and Fido howling with delight!
Take a Walk
Want to walk along the scenic Tennessee River? Then check out Renaissance Park. Spanning 28 acres of river wetlands, the park is home to a diverse array of local flora and fauna, as well as a variety of easily-accessible, paved and non-paved pathways from which to take it all in. Once you and Fido have seen the park (be sure to use a leash), you could also take a short walk to Nooga Paws and pick out a healthy treat for your pup. (Please note that the adjacent
Coolidge Park does not allow pets.)
If you’d prefer to walk above the river instead of beside it, stroll across the historic Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge. Roughly half a mile across, the bridge connects Northshore from Frazier Avenue to downtown. While on the south side, visit the city’s vibrant Bluff View Art District, where you can check out the River Gallery Sculpture Garden, meander outside of the world- renowned Hunter Museum of American Art, or sip a coffee on the patio at Rembrandt’s Coffee House.
Grab a Bite to Eat
Chattanoogans love dining outdoors in nice weather, and a furry friend can tag along at any of the several pet-friendly restaurants in Northshore. While most restaurants and bars do not permit non-service animals inside, every option listed here has ample pet-friendly outdoor seating.
Edley’s Bar-B-Que is a go-to spot for a tasty southern barbeque. Pets are allowed on their sizable outdoor patio, and it’s the perfect location for a mid-afternoon meal on a nice day.
Basecamp Bar & Restaurant on Frazier Avenue is a cozy space to hang out with your pet. There’s a wide array of locally brewed craft beer on their menu, and the food is perfect for lunchtime, or for a light dinner.
The Daily Ration is the place to go if you and your pet are craving some southern brunch. Open from 8 AM until 2 PM, their large covered patio can be enjoyed in any weather, and don’t be surprised if your server offers your pet a treat!
Brewhaus is a German-American pub located on Frazier Avenue. Enjoy schnitzel, brats, and a variety of beers, wines and mixed drinks on the patio, which offers a quintessential Northshore view overlooking Coolidge Park and the Walnut Street Bridge.
The Big Chill and Grill is known around town for their happy hour specials and reasonably priced burgers. Pets are allowed in the outdoor seating areas, and servers tend to offer pets bowls of ice water on hot days!
Mike’s Hole in the Wall on Cherokee Boulevard is perfect for when you’re craving a late-night bite and brew, and want to bring your pup along! Dogs are welcome on their partially covered outdoor patio.
Run and Play
Fido needing a little off-leash action? Red Bank Dog Park, located in neighboring Red Bank, provides a dedicated, fenced-in retreat for our furry friends. The dog park has copious parking, and there are several benches where you can watch your pup socialize. Doggo’s favorite place to run and play is located within White Oak Park, which features covered pavilions for get- togethers and an outdoor play gym with swings and slides for hooman kids.
